What is an expat?

An expatriate (often shortened to expat) is a person residing in a country other than their native country. In common usage, the term often refers to professionals, skilled workers, or artists taking positions outside their home country, either independently or sent abroad by their employers, who can be companies, universities, governments, or non-governmental organisations.[2] Effectively migrant workers, they usually earn more than they would at home, and less than local employees. However, the term 'expatriate' is also used for retirees and others who have chosen to live outside their native country.

ABOUT Kimberlee

Kimberlee Thorne-Harper is the creator and mentor of Expat Mama. She began living abroad in 1992 in Argentina on a mission trip for her church. Then that first trip turned into another 16 years, as she married her husband from Argentina. After 6 years, she was ready to go abroad again, but this time it was Mexico. While in Mexico, she and her boys visited Colombia and Cuba.

She has been a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur, building her own linguistic company from scratch, offering ESL training, translation, editing, proofreading, interpreting and writing services. She has taught Cultural Competence and is a Teacher Trainer. She is a published author with a good following on her blog as well as social media with Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
